SPX -2.85, 7,135, pulled
back in a two-day bull flag pattern.
Breadth weakened again as decliners led on the NYSE and NASDAQ
exchanges. Volume was below average. VIX closed higher, a sign that
institutions added hedges before earnings from mega-caps AMZN, GOOGL, META
and MSFT.
The FOMC
left rates unchanged as expected. I was disappointed to hear media ask speculative
questions, that some might call drivel, rather than focus on monetary
policy. I appreciated that Chair Powell,
in his final press conference as Chair, did a focus his comments on issues that
dealt with monetary policy. A point he
made more than once was that the Fed independence issue was about monetary policy
not being influenced by politics. Well
done Chair Powell!
